Artist’s Talk: Exploring Mandala with Johannes Frischknecht
30 August 2025, 3-4pm
Hong Kong Fringe Club
Born in 1956 in Fehraltorf, Switzerland, Johannes Frischknecht instinctively began drawing mandalas at the age of six. His artistic path led him to the arts colleges of Zurich and Basel, while his lifelong study of Tibetan language and culture deepened his understanding of the origins, symbolism, and ritual dimensions of mandalas. Shaped by meditation practice and the guidance of Tibetan Lamas, he came to recognize the mandala not only as an artistic form but as a field of transformation. His work is best described as “healing art,” offering a bridge between image, practice, and inner experience.
Frischknecht’s mandala art does not replicate traditional thangkas. Instead, he reinterprets the primordial patterns and laws at the foundation of mandala composition, expressing them through a distinctive visual language that reflects both freedom and discipline. His works, imbued with a meditative essence, have reached wide audiences through art cards, calendars, posters, and publications, as well as original pieces exhibited in galleries, therapeutic centers, and hospitals—where they invite viewers into spaces of contemplation, balance, and renewal.
In this private conversation, members are invited to engage directly with Johannes Frischknecht—asking questions, sharing reflections, and exploring both the Buddhist and universal meanings of mandalas. Moderated by Gabriel Lee, the dialogue will be an intimate opportunity to connect with the artist’s wisdom while discovering how mandalas can inspire personal practice and collective insight.
